If you're looking for a cozy, modern accessory to add to your winter wardrobe, let me introduce you to the Codex Cowl. This Tunisian crochet cowl is warm, beautifully textured, and approachable — making it a perfect project for both adventurous beginners and seasoned makers. Worked in the round with a soothing, rhythmic stitch pattern, Codex is one of those designs that’s as enjoyable to stitch as it is to wear. Whether you want something simple and classic or you’re ready to play with color, this cowl is a satisfying make from start to finish.

Some designs take shape quickly. Others take their time — evolving slowly, stitch by stitch, until everything clicks. The Codex Cowl definitely falls into that second category, and I couldn’t be happier to finally share it with you.

This design has been in the works for over six months, developed in collaboration with Christa of The Frosted Stitch. From the very beginning, Christa helped me choose color pairings that would truly sing in Tunisian crochet. She even sent me her new Library Collection colorway, Atlas, to use in the sample — and that connection to her Library theme is what inspired the name Codex.

About the Design

ree

The Codex Cowl is a Tunisian crochet design worked in the round, so there are no seams or edges to fuss with — just a smooth, rhythmic stitch pattern that’s deeply satisfying to work. It’s written for both fingering and DK weight, giving you flexibility to match your favorite yarn base or the season you’re stitching for.

The texture is subtle but eye-catching, especially when paired with hand-dyed yarns. Whether you use tonals, speckles, or gradients, each stitch seems to tell its own story. And if you’re feeling adventurous, the pattern includes an optional color flip halfway through — a simple change that completely transforms the look.

In the photo below, the navy version (on the left) shows exactly what the color flip looks like: the color used for the forward pass and the color used for the return pass switch places midway through the cowl, creating a striking visual shift. The green version (on the right), on the other hand, continues the same color arrangement from start to finish, giving you a more classic, consistent look. It’s such a fun choice to make — subtle or bold, both are beautiful in their own way.
